NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP)

What is NUFP?

The NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program mentors students from traditionally underrepresented and historically disenfranchised populations. This national and campus-based program diversifies and broadens the pipeline for students becoming higher education professionals.

Students and mentors apply together as a pair. If accepted into the program, students are called Fellows and have opportunities for scholarships, on-campus mentorship, and professional development events.

Mission

The mission of the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program is to increase the number of historically disenfranchised and underrepresented professionals in student affairs and/or higher education, including but not limited to those of racial and ethnic-minority background, those with disabilities, and those identifying as LGBTQ.

NUFP at WSU

The NASPA Undergraduate Fellows program at WSU consists of a cohort model, one-on-one meetings with mentors/mentees, and workshops and activities that allow the NUFP fellows to learn about current topics in higher education and student affairs.

Registration for the Fall 2025 Cohort is open now!

Jason Butcherite, Director of Dining Services

I have an extensive culinary background, working in several chef capacities in the private sector and at WSU. I am a WSU alum, graduating from the prestigious School of Hospitality Business Management, and earned my MBA in 2020. I have grown my career at WSU, working in various leadership capacities within the School of Hospitality Business Management and Dining Services.

Griffin Hogan, Assistant Director in Housing and Residence Life

Originally from Washington State, I began my academic career at a small community college in Olympia, South Puget Sound Community College. After transferring to WSU with my AA, I fell in love with Student Affairs through my work as a Resident Advisor. I quickly developed a sense of belonging working in Student Affairs that directly led to my persistence to graduation. I then left WSU to complete my Master's Degree at Texas Tech University where I studied Higher Education Administration. After completing my degree, I came back to WSU to be closer to family after the pandemic, at which time I became a Residential Education Director (RED). My passion areas include mentorship, inclusion, servant leadership, and board games.

Kim Holapa, Chief of Staff for Student Affairs

My career path has spanned various student-facing and administrative roles. I have been at WSU for 29 years and worked in academic settings, student services, and fundraising. I currently manage a broad range of teams and bridging our work with campus and system partners.

Roberto Morales, Associate Director for Student Accommodations and Disability Resources*

As a first-generation college student and professional, I deeply understand the significance of representation and retention in higher education. My journey has equipped me with a unique perspective on the challenges faced by students from diverse backgrounds. With extensive experience in residential life, I have fostered inclusive communities that support student success. Additionally, my work in disability services has allowed me to advocate for equitable access and accommodations. I am committed to empowering students of color and ensuring they have the resources and support needed to thrive academically and personally. Through my dedication, I strive to create a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for all. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a Psychology Minor, a Master of Arts in Education with concentrations in Student Affairs and Educational Organizational Leadership, and I am currently working on my PhD in Cultural Studies, specifically disability studies, at WSU.

Jessica Perone, Assistant Director of Engaged Learning for CCE

I have worked at the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) for almost 9 years. Currently, I lead initiatives to foster community involvement and promote civic responsibility among students, WSU, and residents. With a passion for empowering individuals and strengthening communities, I have been instrumental in developing programs that bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications. Throughout the past 25 years, I have been deeply involved with leading and supporting community-based organizations, taught in K-12, Special Education, and Career & Tech Education (CTE), as well as worked in various Human Services agencies in a variety of administrative, case management, and direct service roles.

Andy Song, Peer Health Education Coordinator

I came to WSU to pursue a major in Computer Science, then Business, and finally graduated with a degree in Sociology. I started working in Student Affairs as a student and decided to stay because of how much I saw Student Affairs staff invest in students! When I'm not working, I am hanging out with my wife and dog, golfing, or just doing something with my hands.

Matt Shaw, Associate Director in the Center for Student Organizations and Leadership

I have worked in the Division of Student Affairs at WSU since 2011 when I started at University Recreation, working with various programs including intramural sports, sport clubs, and youth programs. Currently, I serve as the advisor to a variety of chartered student organizations including ASWSU, GPSA, SEB, and others. I graduated from WSU with my master's degree in 2006 and have served at various other institutions, including University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Central Washington University, and Seattle University.
