Multicultural Student Services to Host 11th Annual La Bienvenida
Department: Office of Multicultural Student Services
The Office of Multicultural Student Services will hold La Bienvenida May 19-20 at the Washington State University Pullman campus.
Eleven years ago, WSU held Alive! Bilingual, which was an orientation program delivered entirely in Spanish. Five years ago, this program was re-envisioned to La Bienvenida, with the aim to lower the rate and move the orientation to the month of May.
Like Alive! Bilingual, La Bienvenida is a student and parent orientation program that is entirely in Spanish, designed to build relationships with parents and help connect them with the resources WSU has to offer. Similar to other student orientations on campus, students will have the opportunity to register for classes during the weekend.
“Having an environment where we speak the same language forms the trust and relationships needed for the student to be successful and for the parent to be a key player in the success of the student,” Marcela Pattinson, Assistant Director of Community Relations and Outreach, said.
Parents and students will arrive on campus for La Bienvenida at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, and stay until 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 20.
During the program, parents and students will have the opportunity to sleep in the residence halls, eat in the dining centers, tour campus, and attend a resource fair. The parents and students will also come together for dinner at Ensminger Pavilion and Noche Cultural, a relaxed evening filled with music and entertainment. Additionally, parents will have the opportunity to participate in two financial aid workshops and one workshop focusing on student resources available through WSU.
“La Bienvenida has involved people who are invested in student success,” Pattinson said. “When the parents leave, we want them to know that we care.”
Registration for La Bienvenida is open now until May 11. For more information on the program, visit labienvenida.wsu.edu.
